Broughty Ferry & Monifieth Active Travel Improvements

Linking Coastal Communities

Dundee City Council and Angus Council are working together to improve the National Cycle Network Route 1 between Broughty Ferry Castle and Monifieth.

Following early consultation with residents and businesses in 2019, initial proposals sought to deliver a safe and accessible traffic-free route between the two communities.

Almost £18 million funding for the project was received through Places for Everyone, an active travel infrastructure programme backed by Transport Scotland and managed by Sustrans. As part of National Cycle Network Route 1, the project aims to provide a safe and direct walking, wheeling and cycling option for residents and visitors to this important coastal area.

Coastal adaptation was considered throughout the project’s development. Tying in neatly with the planned Broughty Ferry Flood Protection Scheme which was already underway, another significant milestone for the project was achieved in March 2024, when the new 5-metre wide Dighty Bridge was opened. Ensuring vulnerable, existing coastal dunes were protected within the project designs was important to coastal resilience. Extensive wildflower planting along the route has supported biodiversity enhancement which compliments the fragile sand dune systems found along the coast.

The new route provides a direct and continuous link along the coastline enabling people of all ages and abilities to travel actively every day.
