Sustainable Kirriemuir – The Kirriemuir BioBlitz 2022

Sustainable Kirriemuir (SK) formed an Action for Nature group after writing a Community Climate Action Plan for the town.  The group decided to run a BioBlitz in and around the Kirriemuir area, setting out to discover as many plants, animals and fungi as possible and to provide opportunities for local people to explore the variety of life on their doorstep.

Over the weekend of 26th-28th August 2022 SK’s team of volunteers and staff assembled a fantastic line-up of wildlife experts and nature enthusiasts. Together we participated in 27 events and counts over the three days and carried out intensive wildlife surveys. Over 150 people joined the events and participated in the activities.

A summary report is available here Bio-blitz-report. The BioBlitz was a springboard for local people who want to take action to help nature.  There are now different groups taking a wide range of actions for nature in and around Kirriemuir: such as the Wild About Kirrie group, which is supporting wildlife gardening; the Kirrie Rifflers group which is monitoring water invertebrates in the local river system and varied activities including hedge, tree and wildflower planting, raising awareness of local swifts and surveying of various species.
